Shibukawa city is located near the center of Gumma prefecture, and is about 120km away from Tokyo.
Once flourishing as a post town, Shibukawa city has played its function as a juncture between Maebashi city and Numata city, and as an entrance to famous hot spa areas including Kusatsu onsen, Ikaho onsen and Shima onsen.
History
April 1, 1954: Shibukawa city was established as a city
1984: Declared “Center of Japan Navel Town”
1996: Entered into Friendship City relations with Logan city, Australia
1999: Held All Japan Navel Summit
2000: Entered into Sister City relations with Foligno city, “Navel of Italy”
Feb. 20, 2006: Today’s Shibukawa city was established after incorporation of Old Shibukawa city, Ikaho town, Onogami village, Komochi village, Akagi village and Kita-tachibana village.
Main Industries
Ikaho area, having Ikaho hot spa, is famous for tourism industry, and Mizusawa udon.
Komochi area is famous for Konnyaku (konjac).
